Today I went to a local resale shop, and I could not believe my eyes. There before me was a GREAT-looking, Extremely clean OMC Lower unit.... factory painted black. I immediately thought : Johnson Tracker Lower unit....obviously OMC. The owner of the shop knew nothing about it. He said it was a Mercury Lower Unit because it was Black in Color. I knew better. It went through all the gears (F-N-R) with no issues. It was Super-Clean. Obviously Fresh Water. He had two props with it. A BRAND NEW OMC Raker Stainless Steel Prop (13 1/2 x 22) and a BRAND NEW OMC Aluminum Prop (14 x 19) I purchased All 3 pieces for a bargain price.

I need help in identifying the Lower Unit. The only numbers I can find are 340491 D2 and a casting number 98-99-20-21

Does anyone have any ideas of what I have?

Re: OMC Lower Unit Identification

Hey Boobie. Yes, I will do that tomorrow. After diging around a little, I THINK I have determined what I have.

V-4 60 degree Lower Unit Gearcase 1995-2005
* Used only on 60 degree V-4 engines with a 20 Inch Shaft
* Also used on the 75-90 HP inline 3 cyl E-Tec (04-06 ) with 20 inch Shaft.

Boobie, I just dont remember a Johnson or Evinrude being BLACK in color (other than Tracker Series) Am I completely off base with this one?

during those years they made 115 hp Intruder and Faststrike Motors.. they also were 60 degree loopers.... they actually Reved a little higher....but I don't know why.....they also made them in v6 150 and 175 hp versions as well they were painted very very dark almost black from the factory. In addition they made 115 hp motor sin v4 60 degree block design that were NOT ocean runners or ocean pros, not Intruder or fastrikes.. and were painted a dark gray and a very dark blue.....they were designated EL versions instead of the ocean runner and pros which were SL or the intruder and faststikes which were GL versions.......when you have looked for parts as long as I have....you find these variations....MOTOR EVINRUDE INTRUDER 115HP en Asunci?n .bob

Its really weird. This thing is painted Mercury BLACK (original paint thru and thru) and it is a Johnson / Evinrude gearcase for sure. In fact, I thought it looked familiar. I have the exact same gearcase on my 2003 Johnson Bombardier 90.
