Hello all,
I have a 1974 reinell with a 225 hp OMC outdrive. I stripped the pinion gear on the vertical driveshaft in the lower case. I got a new gear and driveshaft. I am now putting the driveshaft in the case. It is saying that I have to use a shim guage on the bearing to see how many shims to use, so that the shaft doesnt sit too high or low. I cant seem to find the shim guage around here. I can use my caliper if someone knows the spec they are looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Bruce

GLM sells the shim gauge and so does OMC. The part number for the gauge should be in your repair manual. THe gauge is basically a gig you place on your assembly and then you mic for shims needed to flush it out. You might find it on ebasicpower.com. Good luck.

Do you have any idea what the measurement is, so that I could just use a my calipers?

I ment jig not gig. Ha. AS each shaft, gear, and bearing assembly, after they are assembled, may not be the same size as the assembly you took out to begin with will result in a shimming situation. After you stack your assembly together out of the lower unit, you place the jig on the assembly. There is a mesuring point from the end of the jig to another point [check manual} from this point to the jig point is the thickness of the shims you'll need. This is complicated and hard to explain. Good Luck

The spacing is critical on these pinion gears. The spacing is the spec you are looking for and it should be in your manual. I don't how you can set it with a caliper.

i guess what i am trying to ask is, if someone has one of these guages, are they willing to get out a set of calipers and measure it (the inside dimension) so that i can use my calipers as a reference?

Re: OMC lower unit shim spec

these gauges fit on the assembly. It is a proprietary trick by OMC. They all do it. I've got the gauges for the upper gearcase but not the lower. I'm assuming they work the same way as the upper. Went to a local marina and bought what they had. They didn't work on OMC stringers anymore. I don't have my OMC anymore or the manual. Give me the part number on that guage and I'll see if the dealer steal has it. There is another guage, I'm sure, for the other gear. The mesh on these gears are critical.

Yo Elknuts,

Called the marina today and they said they sold them all to a guy named Byron Clark of BCM {Byron Clark Marine}. He's a backyard guy lke myself. Didn't even know what a stringer is. Just bought the tools in a lot sale. He's supposed to get back to me if he's got it. He hasn't called yet and it's been some time. His number is 352-564-1324. Call and tell him you got me to call and I'm out of pocket and you're following up.

Elknuts,

He never called me back. Let me know if he calls you and you need my help. If he lets you mic it like you want I would be willing to go over and confirm. It's not far from here and I'd like to check out his place. He's new around here.
