My motor is over heating.
I put it on muffs, and water was pooring out the side.
Found out this plug fell out.
I looked in the manuel, but cannot find a name for it.
Does anyone know what this plug would be called?
See picture 1-the other side of the motor has a plug in it with omc written on it.
The opposite side of the motor, the plug is missing.

So water runs right out the moror,so thats why it over heats.0515121717.jpg
Looks like its pressed on hu?0515121717a.jpg

Re: omc motor plug?

it was originally held on with a flat "nut" on the backside
Only way to retrieve that "nut" is to invert the drive and shake it out.
Many have just jammed something that won't corrode in the hole and JB welded over it.

I'm new to this, but that looks like the PFH. Plug from hell. very difficult to get back in, from what I understand, it is connected to a water passage. Other, more informed people, may chime in.

LOL... A lot of Cobra Owners have made the mistake of taking that out! Actually I have heard of a few Marina's around here doing it LOL!

What do you call that?lol.
Is it an expandable rubber piece?
Looks like that would work ;)
i think before it was just a flat piece of metal like the one on the other side.
Its gotta be plugged i take it because water just shoots out with the muffs on,and no water gets to the water pump,so no water going up to cool the manifolds.
Very interesting.

Re: omc motor plug?

The first thing I did when I picked up my OMC cobra, was to buy JB weld... and the recess that screw fits in was filled until it was flat... I don't want anyone ever taking it out... The original cobra liqui-dome decal that was over that screw was stuck right back in to the JB weld.. it ain't ever coming off...

To fix it without removing the drive, shove a coin in to the hole, cover it with JB weld, and then stick something pretty over it and hold in place with tape until it is set up... I have seen others use a half dollar or silver dollar and it looks kinda cool

this was a factory access hole to get at the water passage, there will never be a need for you to get in there...

Now, if you have lost the surround in the motor that held the bolt ( which it looks like you have) you may need to go with the rubber freeze plugs like shown above..

Re: omc motor plug?

I don't know what a surround is,but im guessing its a smaller inner hole or indented circle.
It looks like a 50 cent piece will fit in there nicely though, and the backing will keep it in tight, then jb weld over it.
Should be almost flush then :)
Should i just go over the edges,or smear jb weld all over the coin?
Would be nice to see a 50 cent piece shining in there, lol.

What is going to happen if the JB pops out and you dont realize it? I would go with the rubber plug.

Re: omc motor plug?

Ok so its called a rubber freeze plug correct?
Should be able to find that at fleet and farm.
So when i tighten the bolt,it expands to tighten in the hole right?
Thanks alot.

Because he does not have the surround, I would also advise the rubber plug.. but you can be sure that if he glued a silver dollar over that hole with JB weld, it would take 3 nuclear engineers with power tools to figure out how to get it off. JB weld doesn't "pop off" of anything.. it would stick right to that paint and bare metal like it was part of it... JB Weld is a boaters best friend... It is considered a rich man's duct tape...

OP, yes, the rubber expanding plug or freeze plug should be able to be purchased at any home or auto supply.. get one that is just a hair smaller than the actual hole..
