And I bet it will run great with the garden hose hooked up to it, but get in the lake and it gets rougher to start, etc., like mine. Your boat may have the same or similar ESA system mentioned in earlier threads.

I'm not really an OMC guy, but the ESA acts like a shift interrupter switch(kind of)......
If I am not mistaken, (as I often am), it only kills half of the cylinders....
If it is stuck or malfunctioning, that could cause your symptom.....:)

While you have the pluggs out just do a simple compression check. Takes only a few minutes and will tell you plenty about your bolck, head, valves and head gasket. To me also sounds like a cracked block, head or a blown head gasket. White smoke = water, Blue smoke = Oil, Black smoke = Fuel.

Just make it simple by starting with a simple compression check.

Would Black Smoke mean bad fuel?

I ended last season with black smoke. After starting the engine , it was running rough, then black smoke, then died. I have not tried to start yet.

One other time I was using the boat, it gave me some black smoke and rough running. I was having some timing issues, so I turned the boat off, moved the distributor, and when it started up, it ran fine.

Any ideas? I was thinking to drain the gas tank and start with fresh gas.

oh yeah.....I have a 1998 Volvo Penta 3.0L 4cyl that I replaced with a new 3.0L 2 years ago.

Ok guys the verdict is in. Here is what the shop told me. As soon as they started it up cause it was running so rough they thought that I had dropped a cylinder or two. So they did a compression test and all cylinders feel with in the 10% range. Well to make a long story short 8 new spark plugs and $150 later my boats running like new!haha I would have never guessed it was the spark plugs only!
