hello to all. walmart has 2 quarts of super tech gear lube 80w90 gl5 for 12.00 is this good for my omc cobra outdrive? it doesnt say anything about marine applications. I plan on changing the oil out tomorrow morning. If not does autozone or pepboys carry some kind of high visc gear oil? I dont have any marine stores around where im at right now, so im hoping one of these places will have something i can use. thanks for all your help.

Re: omc oil type

I have been using Walmart's "SuperTech" in my OMC Cobra drive, and several outboards, for quite some time. But, I do want to point out that they carry both a standard 80w90 and a marine 80w90. Although there's probably no difference, except for the label, I've always used the marine version. And, I've never had a problem.
Cheers!

your wally world should have a small marine section. You will find a pump and quicksilver high performance marine drive lube.

I think the primary difference in regular and marine gear lube is that marine has additional additives to compensate for water intrusion.

80w90 or 75w90 will work fine. For marine applications it should be semi-synthetic or fully synthetic. The manufacturers insist we should only use their "special" oil and often don't reveal the oil specifications. BRP charges $40+ for a 12 oz bottle of BRP's "special" synthetic gear oil, while neglecting to tell us that any 75w90 synthetic gear oil will work fine, which can be purchased for under $12 a quart.
