Hi Dale. Welcome aboard!!! I am going to move this ove to the I/O section. You have been given good advice, and this topic has been very well discussed here. Do a search over there and you will find a whole ton of info on this that basically comes to the same conclusion with the additional of Volvo for your search list if there is good service where you are located.

Post whatever you do find and we'll help you with specifics too. Good luck!!

haven't been made for years, so finding a mechanic and parts could be difficult. (and therefore expen$ive!)

I agree with the majority that you need to keep looking for a boat with an outdrive that is more common and easily serviced.

That is absolutely true. Unless you plan on doing the work yourself you may find that there are no mechanics in your area that will even look at it, much less work on it.

Hi Dale,

Depends on a few things I suppose.

The people who are familiar with them and can scrounge parts on ebay, craigslist, junk yards and are also able to cannibalize parts from wrecked boats and have all the tools, experience and time to work on them, won't have a lot of problems.....(until they try to find a "show-stopper" part that no longer exists )

For most of the rest of us, the fact that OMC is a company that went out of business more than 10 years ago is a show stopper all by itself unless the engine/drive is an OMC SX (which is essentially a Volvo Penta) In that case, it has to be around a 1996 model or so (or newer).

In that case, they're not all that much cheaper than a comparable Volvo or Mercruiser of the same year.

Most people here that work in the business, will probably tell you to steer clear of anything OMC.....And some of the techs that I have talked to don't want to work on them at all.

If you have to have an I/O, I would suggest that you find a boat with a Volvo or Mercruiser system.

Good luck,

Rick
