Re: OMC out MERC. in

I know a LOT of people call them "Freeze-Plugs"..... (core-plugs)

A better description is probably "Freeze-Damage" plugs.....because they do not protect anything from freeze damage.......they usually indicate that it has already happened.

Better yet, they should just be called "casting plugs" because that's what they are.

Re: OMC out MERC. in

Sorry guys, I previously stated the drive unit on the donor boat was a 120 mercruiser and drive.... walked by the boat this morning and there on the drive unit is a big decal with "140" plain as day !! Still not sure if its an Alpha ,, Pre Alpha or something else ... Looked for numbers as stated in the forums but cant locate any ... I do not think the outdrive has been changed ,so Im thinking it is a 1977-79 whatever... any thoughts ??? It does have nuts instead of clips on trim cylinders.
Am planning on making an adapter to pressure check engine block this weekend ,will post results ...THANKS !!

Its probably an MC-1R or an MR. Great drive lots of parts interchangeable with the Alpha 1. The 120 and 140 are the same drive, gear ratios, etc. Only difference is engine displacement.

Got mine fired up this weekend everything works. Just waiting on my rebuilt trim/tilt pump.

Start a thread and post pics on the swap as you go.

Thanks For the response Reavesga....
After Further Examination of the drive its hard for me to believe it had bearings & seals put in it then only two seasons of running. It has that "PATCHED Up" Look , you know, when you look at something and everthing is there but it just dosent look like all the pieces belong together. Bellows are bad ,gear lube watered down , u - joints seem sloppy , etc. just has that "Look" good thing is, unit is free turning and case around bearings seems to be solid ...Probably just needs to be gone through again .
Any Idea which merc. manual would cover this unit ??? How about the engine ...120 gm 4 cyl .
Thanks Guys for all the responses !!!
