How fast are you putting it into gear? If I push the throttle too slow I get the clicking until it is fully engaged. Sounds like you are not fully engaging the gear fast enuff.

-JustMrWill

It sould like you transom shift cable may need replacing, the clicking is the clutch dog trying to ingauge in to gear, don't run the risk with the cobra's, if you destroy the Clutch dog and gear set you will have a Big Bill (+1000)

Re: OMC Outdrive Clicking

I have the same problem on an 89 sitting on a 5.0L. Just replaced the upper unit (bevel gears were completely gone) Tore the lower unit down about 80% and did a visual/clean/grease and it looked OK. I notice that reverse is fine, but forward "clicks" unless I jump on it. That's fine except for docking & trailering.
Does the cable sound like a good next step? If so, any ideas what's involved?
