OMC Outdrive tilt(or not)

I have an 1982 OMC with big rubber boot.
Tilt goes up only so far and than stops.It goes down without problem.
I was able after awhile to assist tilting it up by pressing the tilt button and at the same time lifting it with a rope.
Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be.

No limit switch for the stringer outdrive.

What do you see, hear, feel when the drive ceases to go up?

You could have a tilt motor whose brushes are shot. The manual outlines a torque test for them.

I would also inspect your tilt gearbox and make sure it has oil, not water in it.

Other than those, I would check and clean all connections and grounds. I would also spray your two big 50A fuses connectors with electrical contact spray then rub a little dielectric grease over the female sides and reconnect them.

Things to check are:
Battery fully charged?
Pivot bearings greased?
Tilt clutch gearbox full of water instead of oil?
Tilt clutch plates corroded?
Cover for tilt gearbox overtightened or missing gasket/shim?
Electrical connections to/from solenoids clean and tight?
Knife connections to tilt motor clean and tight?

Check all these things and let us know what you find. BTW, welcome to iboats!

Good point. Mine only has one and works OK, but I have read from several sources that doubling them helps prevent binding the clutch.

Methinks you should start a new thread, enrecia, instead of hanging your question on the end of someone elses post. And when you do, PLEASE include what kind of power system your boat has. A 1976 ArrowGlass Cheetah does not get us there!
