Re: OMC outdrive

I think most here will indicate first getting a manual if you don't have one and then looing at the shift linkage adjustment. I don't have a mechanical shift, but have read through many posts(always curious) where adjustments made to this area have fixed the isssue.

Wait a second for some others more knowledgable to help you out with this. I would also do a search for shift linkage, or shift cable adjustment in the forumns, chances are you will find your answer there.

My 1988 4.3 OMC was stuck in reverse, turned out to be a broken shift cable from motor to lower unit.

With the motor raised sitting on the ground looking up thats where mine was fryed and damaged.

Several things you can do to start. Drain the gear lube.......what does it look like? is there lots of metal on the magnet?
Another thing to try is pull the drive and move the shift shaft in the drive up and down and see if you can turn the ujoint shaft and make the prop shaft turn.
Then check the shift cable for operation. If it's stiff or corroded, it will cause the same problem.
Drives and shift cables don't just go out of adjustmentn unless something was left loose, and that would be easy to see.
