OMC Outdrive

I have an '89 Bayliner with an OMC Cobra outdrive. After running the motor most of the day while fishing, the shifting became increasingly more difficult. It would shift into forward or reverse, but would not shift back into neutral. The next day when i tried to trouble shoot the problem, it worked smooth as silk, with no indication of any problem at all. Can someone please enlighten me??? Thanks

I have an 88 outdrive cobra and I too had shifting problems. Was not the cable, but the lower unit gears were broke on a few teeth. Replaced them and the shifting is much better.
