OMC overheat?

here is a quick question. I have an OMC 5.8 engine with a new water pump and a 160 thermostat. I have been running the engine and it's been running fine right in the area of 160. What temp would be too high for the engine? Is 160 the correct thermostat? The major question is after shutting the engine down I notice that the temperature gauge will rise. Is that due to the cooling system being shut down with the engine and the engine is still hot or do I have problems?

160 is fine. The temp rises because the engine isn't moving cooling water through anymore. You should only care about the temp when running.

Okay so no damage will be done if it heats up after shutting the engine down? When this happened I started it up and the temp dropped immediately. I figured the temp would probably rise as the engine is still hot but not circulating cooling water
