I need to pull the carbs on my 1997 Evinrude 115hp and clean them. I've cleaned carbs before but this will be the first plastic carb I've cleaned. What solvents can I safely use to clean the orifices when I have them off the motor. Normally I would just get a spray can and use compressed air on them but I don't want to damage the plastic.

Look for a VOC Compliant carb cleaner.I know liquid wrench sells one..it will not damage plastic...Also have had pretty good luck with contact cleaner...This works good and defenitely will not damage plastic....

Story of my life, the only responses I get are people inquiring about my bumps

Hey!!! You bumped!!!

OK, I will weigh in.
I cleaned my plastic carbs by soaking them in plain gasoline. If you want, you can add some SeaFoam.
My carbs were very clean to begin with, so the gas worked fine.
I used wire on the metal jets, after removing them of course.
I blew all passages out with comp. air, both one way, and then the other way from normal fuel flow.

Now, here is WHAT NOT TO USE!!!
DO NOT USE.
Laquer thinner.
Acetone.
Ether based starting fluid.
Fingernail polish remover.
Automotive carb cleaners (that caustic crap in the one gallon round can with the built in basket).
And probably many many more.

SeaFoam has always worked for me, and you can find it everywhere. I soak the carb overnight and then use compressed air on the passages.

Now get to a doctor to have those bumps looked at!

In my experience...Seafoam does work, but if you have heavy buildup your are really going to have to work to get it out...And the Seafoam will not free it...Seafoam will work great if minor buildup is present, but not if it is so gummed up that it is choking out the engine....Hope this helps.
