OK fellas i know i will hear a bunch of crap over this but here it go,s i was wondering why so many boaters put down the omc cobra i see a lot of them out there and everyone that i have talked to about them that have them on there boats dont have a problem with the snakes but to hear most on here talk down about them i know the older cobras from the 70,s to early 80,s had some
problems but if omc was really that bad how did they stay in business for so long and was able to compete against the merc for so long thanks for reading

Have towed in a few boats with OMC outdrives when fishing. If you get one never raise the outdrive all the way up unless you are at dock. This was from several years ago, don't know if it got any better. Grandfather drove it into to me, never buy a boat with a OMC.

Every part, piece, assembly, etc WILL have some sort of problem sooner or later despite the "brand". Anyone who says anything else...well...doesnt own a boat! I own a 1988 2150 cf bayliner capri bowrider with a 5.0 OMC and have had to contend with the shifting problems that are so often discussed. Fixed 'em. Had a few other minor problems. I'm currently In the process of a COMPLETE restoration of the entire boat, including replacement of ALL wood. The main point I want to make here is this: With a model that has been around as long as OMC, EVERY problem that could be had, HAS been had. These forums are FULL of help. No matter WHAT, someone, somewhere knows how to get you through it. I am happy with my OMC and feel very confident that when (not if! lol) it breaks again, I will be able to find the information I need to fix it.

+1. i have the 5.0 omc in my 1950, and im happy with it. i get compliments on how smooth it runs actually. i take care of it, and yes there are things to fix, but same thing on my dads immaculate mercruiser as well. like today, found a fuel leak on the omc...not major, but could happen to any boat. fixed it. thats how it goes on pretty much any boat that i have had experience with, things break and you fix them. thats why they are ALL moneypits haha. but all in all, im happy with it. probably the last one i'll own, just because everything seems to be mercruiser these days on. oh, and I changed the oil and fired her up for the new season this week too!!!

I have an 89 OMC Cobra 2.3 liter, ya it's got some problems but what 20 year old motor won't. I am having to replace the gears in it now and that got into my pocket book, but whats money anyways.

hi agree with you 89vip its only money if you didn't put it into your boat it would have gone some where else and most of the time you don't have any thing to show for it

another plus for the OMC.....the raw water impeller is on top of the outdrive, 6 bolts and about 10 min later its changed. Its ALOT more than that on the mercruisers from what i have heard. Just changed mine today.

ya i changed my impeller just the other day, and for a rookie it was simple. 6 bolts and a hose and it was down all in all about 15 minutes. Also put in new plugs, plug wires, thermostat, oil/oil filter, fuel filter, replaced hoses, installed second battery, new stereo, 2 speakers, amp, all this in about 4 hours. AND FOR ME THAT GOOD. Runs like a charm except now I need new throttle cables and possible dog clutch, OUCH..But I am happy with it

89 vip vindicator w\331 sbf OMC COBRA and proud of it! every body tells me trash it and bolt on a merc. for what? it takes the same amount of maintiance as a merc. an ill race any merc owner on installing a water pump . shoot i can put it on in the river if needed. well all im saying is if maintaned it will work just as good or better then the competition.
