Thanks for reading. I have a 88 bayliner with 29 hours on it. It was a gift from mom and dad. I have a problem with it hopefully someone can help me. When going down the water every now and then the motor or seems to jump out of gear for a split second. Then every thing is fine, it does it no load under load no certain pattern. Someone mentioned some type of switch that cuts the cyls to 2 instead of 4. Whats your opinion he wants 150.00 for switch. Thanks

Re: Omc problem

Tell him to shove the switch. It sounds like your shift cable is out adjustment or it's shot, which that $150.00 micro switch that he's trying to grab you for isn't going to remedy. Or he may not be familiar with OMC drives. The shift cable adjustment on Cobra's is a common & well known issue, which must be fixed or you can kiss your lower unit bye- bye. Do a search here for Stuart Hastings, & you can read all about it. But, don't delay on getting it taken care of.

Re: Omc problem

I take that back. The shift cable is a common issue for mechanics that have worked on the Cobra drive. You need someone that knows what they're doing as far as OMC's are concerned.

Thanks for the help and no it still has the orig motor. I believe i have some books that came with the boat and I'll look for the owners manual. Now to find somebody to set my cables that I can trust. Again thanks

Re: Omc problem

If it is a 88 then it may have the original cable which they had major problems with. You need to change out that cable. Don't run the boat anymore or you will be replacing your lower gear set too. Hopefully, it is not too late for them.
