Does anyone know if the replacement magneto coils for OMC 50s,60s,70s hold up any better than the original?
Either OMC or after market.
I would think it's possible the replacement coils could be failing at this point.
I haven't replaced a coil since my youth. Is there a way to tell replacement from original?

Re: OMC replacement coils

On my 1987 70, my coils (I assume original) started going bad after 34 years. I just put in replacements and since they are only $33 each, if they last a third as long (10 years) I won't complain.

OMC was constantly changing their epoxy coils. You can tell the age of them by the color....if you know which colors were used, when. Seems like the green and purple ones held up best. Their newer ones have a hard plastic shell with a skinny nose where the plug wire enters. So do the aftermarket ones. I've seen plenty of the plastic shells crack too, just differently than the old epoxy ones did.
