OMC selecta trim ideas....

I have an OMC Stringer with the selecta trim. One of my rams is leaking. It does hold pressure but it's only a mater of time before it all needs to be upgraded. Problem is those rams are hard to find. I have no idea how to rebuild them and I don't even know if they sell rebuild kits. <br /><br />I was wondering if there is a solution to this problem. I noticed the V6 had trim but it was different and used a threaded rod to raise the engine up or down to trim it. The system looked more reliable. I wonder if it would fit a 5.7 liter. Then again maybe it won't have enough mustard to raise a V8. I thought about just buying motor mounts and going that route. Thing is that would eliminate trim.

If it has rams then it not a stringer it a Cobra. Stringer up until 1985. Cobra 1985 until the end of OMC. I know nothing about the Cobra. The stringer used a quad Gear to raise the out drive for tilt. It raised and lowered the front of the engine for trim. Also has a big hole in the transom and big rubber seal between the out drive and transom to keep the water out.

I've Got 1 of those,..... Out in the backyard,.....<br /><br />It's a Stringer Drive, 351 Windsor,.... With Hyd. Trim,... Where you'd Think there should be Motor Mounts.........<br /><br />1973 Vintage,... I'm pretty Sure......

Mine is a Stringer not a Cobra....I have what I thought where called rams but I guess you could call them motor mounts that have the hydraulic cylinders built into them. What a retarded design. I believe the GM motor has a different hydraulic system than the Ford. Both are called Selecta Trim I believe.

The rams are rebuildable. I've never done it, but the OMC manual give you instructions how to. <br /><br />If I were going to attempt it, I would do both of them seeing how you have to support the engine via a jack or hoist to do it. <br /><br />There is no mod that I'm aware of to do otherwise. It's the only way to trim out the boat.

I wonder if the rear motor mounts are the same on both systems?<br /><br />It would definetly require some electical modding to make that switch.

I don't believe the Selec-Trim system had rear mounts.The hydraulic rams that were part of the side motor mounts, worked a cradle that supported the engine.<br /><br />Most hydraulic cylinder systems use rams (pistons).<br /><br />Stringer drives may be the only sterndrive systems to have hydraulic trim cylinders.<br /><br />But rebuilding on of these units could be hard,as parts are hard to get.I would make sure it is not a line leaking as they did rust out.Only auto brake line from what I've seen.<br /><br />Does anyone have more info on the threaded type of trim ? I have seen it only on inline 4 and 6 cylinder engines,but if the V's had it,it could be a good idea.<br /><br />DHP

My V6 has separate rams on each front motor mount. I didn't think the screw type jacks had enough torque to lift the V8's. <br /><br />My '83 shop manual lists no mechanical jack for V8, only hydraulic.

If it took more than a couple hours to remove, rebuild and install the cylinders I'd be shocked. <br />Look pretty darn simple to me.<br />I'd budget 20 hours to convert to screw type.

DHPMARINE: I just got home here is the info.<br />In the parts book it shows 200 model 990267k pg 21<br />Engine mount group. It shows an exploded view of the mount.In the service manual its on page 10-1.<br />The one I have is a 1981 model 982435 305 200HP with a screw type selectrim. If anyone can tell me how to get pictures on here I'll send it.<br />Thanks Beef
