My key switch is broken. I started to dis-assemble the shifter throttle assembly and my manual does not cover this. I removed two of the three screws in the back, the third broke off & I had hoped to unscrew it with vice grips once I got the box apart, (but may end up drilling it out). I removed the allen screw and shifter assembly & the three screws that hold the shifter assembly bracket in place. I can not find any more screws to unscrew, and the case will not come appart but appears to be held where the screw broke off (i recovered 1/4 of the screw)which was in the upper part near the throttle control for neutral starting. Whatother screws do I need to do to get the shifter box apart, any warnings about springs poping out, thngs breaking etc., can anyone e-mail me a diagram pictures work for me!
Thanks and have a great 4th of July!

If you check the ishopmarine site and do a parts search for your motor, you will get a diagram of your controller. I found there site very useful!

Try a "Easy Out" to get the broken bolt out that way you won't have to retap. can get them at hardware store they work great.

Re: OMC Shifter/throttle dis-assembly

The boat and motor are 1981 so I am assuming the controller is the same year. It looks like a standard OMC controller. I think the scew's shaft is to small for an easy out, but if I could get the case appart, there would be enough meat to grab hold of it with vise grips. Maybe some of the screw threads are on the top side of the case which is holding it together. I know - Patience with cast aluminum is the Key to saving money!

Rick...is the warm up lever on top or is it mounted on the side of the control box?

Re: OMC Shifter/throttle dis-assembly

Sounds the same as my control. Once the three screws are out (or the heads broken off, your choice), it just pulls apart. It may take some gentle prying if it's been together a while, but (in mine at least) once those three screws were out, it came apart.

Oh, and (lesson learned) if you want to take the control cables out, those pins that look pressed in, aren't. They come right out. Took me a while to figure that out.

Thanks for the support. The warmup lever is on top and the key is a push to chock key. I live in Italy on an island called Sardinia which is in a group of islands.I picked a new key switch up at the Johnson shop and plan on trying to drill part of the screw out (at least whats holding it in top half of the controller shell) and pry on the controller till the the thing comes appart. Thanks for photos Tacklewasher, looks like a bad dream gone good!
