OMC stern drive color

I've got my '85 Series 400 (or whatever they called it that year) OMC stern drive off and apart to replace the shift cable.

Previous owners have made it an ugly mix of silver and black. I've been stripping the paint off today since I have it apart.

What color is this thing supposed to be? My useless Clymer manual makes me think it's supposed to be white due to the color of it on a Wellcraft on the cover and from the black/white pictures but under the silver and black there seems to be some bronze or gold, kind of like the color of the intermediate housing and engine.

Any ideas guys? Until then I'll at least throw some primer on it

The 84-85s were silverish gray, but i'm not sure if the correct shade is still available. You could paint it Mercury phantom black and the boat would go faster :)

Overtons has the correct color for Cobra outdrives. I purchased some for my set up. The color matched perfectly.

My 84 V-6 is silver, but I think the 400s were off white.

I decided on white...used Rustoleum flat white and though it's a bit brighter than an off-white, well, oh well, its nicer than the silver here, black there scheme it had
