I have a 89 sunbird w/5.0 302 ford moter in it. OK this is what has been done. A marina has replaces the shift cables and has adjusted the shift linkage. The marina has told me that I should consider replacing or rebuilding the upper stern drive and they said was getting "tired". I have replace the lower gear unit last year. After this weekend I concluded that I need to do this now as it won't stay in gear under load. Can anyone confirm that my upper stern drive needs to be rebuilt. Also can you direct me on finding a complete rebuilt kit for this job. I alread own a Clymer book. Please help! thanks

HMMMM... the lower gear case is new. I have a problem putting the boat into drive. If i push on the shifting linkage it will engage. If I don't help it to engage it clutters and eventally it will go. Could this still be the problem? thanks for the help

I think a marina needs to double check their work...It sounds like a bad or damaged cable.

You may want to look here: http://www.funkopolis.com:8080/~stuart/cobra/

Your problem has nothing to do with the upper. It's probably started by an improperly adjusted shift cable. i hope you haven't hurt the lower gears and clutch dog.

Anytime you break open a gearcase you should ALWAYS plan on having a re-seal as part of the job. You have the drive apart anyway.

A manual would be a good start.
