OMC Stern Drive Steering HELP

Just bought 83 Sylvan 16' with 3.0 inboard OMC Stern Drive. The steering cable is broke no way of repairing I got a OMC part number of a 979914 on the cable research I have done tells me it is called a Tru Course Steering or Stringer Steering...Some information I need is how to get rear gear off of stern drive I have pulled gear off but cannot get shaft all the way or enough to remove steering gear assembly any Ideas? Is this cable available? Can I change my whole steering setup is that and option with this cable stern drive type? I would change the whole setup if I could with obtaining the same stern drive but different steer setup? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yer pretty much stuck with replacing the cable. They are available but not cheap. To get the drum off of the rear shaft, you have to pull the outdrive. There is a notch in the back side of the tru course drum that has a flat blade set screw inside that you need to back out. That detaches the drum from the shaft. Then pull the shaft and gear out thru the back, paying attention to all of the bushings and spacers.

Measure the length of your cable then start looking. They show up, used, on ebay quite regularly.

979914 on the cable

last 2 digits are the length drum center to drum center - in this case 14 feet.
they show on eBay from time to time.

Can anyone help me on advice on taking out the steering drive shaft out of drive I got the gear and pin to move but needs to come 1/2 in more but Im hitting drive Any Ideas? Thanks Brent Boyle

1) Remove the drive off of the boat as stated above.

2) Get yourself a manual.

Order a shop manual it will tell you how to do everything and make life simplier. with the shop manual removing the outdrive it pretty straight forward.
