Hello...I have a 1977 18' Omega with a 190 hp omc stern drive...I have had it for a few months with no problems untill now...The stern drive will not go up or down...I used it yesterday and when I came into the dock it would not go up...I took the gear off of the drive and lifted it up manualy...When I move the switch to bring it up all I hear is a clicking sound from what looks like a solenoid on the engine...I can see the motor but I can't figure out how to get it out to check it...I don't know if it is a relay the solenoid or the motor...ANY ideas would be appreciated....

Start with a manual for that motor/boat.
It will have a test for each component in that system. Follow the test procedure for each to pass or fail it before you move on.
No use replaceing the tilt motor if it turns out to be the battery or a fuse or switch.

If you have done tests or have questions about the results, post those questions. Some will have the experience to answer.

To ask such an open question about an electrical issue with no place to start or no testing done, leaves only guesses.

Don't give up.

Re: Omc stern drive won't tilt up or down

Glad to see you are not discouraged.
I have an Omc I/o in my boat that died only after throttle down at speed. Change the ignition fuse, start, idle high - low - high....no problem. Put in gear past 1/4 throttle no problem. Full throttle again n.p., but throttle down .... dead in the water.

Turns out the trim wires were grounding in the throttle handle but until you start to do tests, I needed to where to start and then where to go etc.
Especially with electrical, without a road map, I am lost and considering my family is in the boat, I need eletrical system working.

The wires in question were fine for continuity in the first test. But when tested with throttle decreased in gear only more and more....found the short.

Davep
You might want to check the two 50 amp fuses near the starter. One of them supplies the voltage to the Solinoid that runs your tilt motor. If it goes bad solinoide will click but when contacts make no current goes to the tilt motor.

I sorry let me back up. Do You have a stringer mounted OMC I/O. Probably a series 800. This is the one with the big rubber seal around the outdrive. Also the tilt motor drives a tilt clutch which drives a 1/4 round gear attached to the outdrive. If not forget everything I said.

Boatist...I do have the series 800 with the BIG rubber seal...When I took the cover off of the clutch housing mustard colored guck came out...So I'm pretty sure the seal was leaking. I'm starting to think that the tilt clutch is the problem...I have the boat at my cabin so I will dive into it AGAIN this weekend...I'm going to take the clutch apart and clean and lube it...
Also if I understand you correctly there are fuses by the starter and if the one for the tilt goes bad the solenoid will just click ??? That IS what is happening...I don't remember seeing the fuses but I will look this weekend....THANKS for the help.........

OK...I have looked and looked for the fuses but I cannot find them...Near the starter or anyplace in the engine bay..It seems to be getting a little over 12 volts to the motor but I don't know if there are enough amps to turn it ,could that be a solenoid problem ???...The solenoids just click. But do they nornally click ???I have the clutch apart and can turn the shaft that goes to the motor but the motor will not move when I hit the switch  ....I'm getting more frustrated.......THANKS

Hi, Dave.

Have you considered putting your question about your I/O problem on the I/O Troubles Forum?

I suspect that you will get more help there than on the Outboard Troubles Forum.

Good luck. :)
