I am a new boat owner so please bare with me. I just bought a 1977 Galaxy which has an OMC Stern Drive. There is a constant knocking noise in the stern drive and noticed the ball gears were a bit worn. The ball gears are like 30% worn. Is this what could be causing the knocking? and if it is, Could I still use the boat and put up with the noise or I have to change them? Might sound like a no brainer question but like I said, this is my first boat.
Thanks

You really do need to replace those ball gears. More importantly, you need to comfirm what the knocking noise is. You may be slipping the clutch in the lower unit.

no, 30% wear would not make any serious knocking. Mine are about 30% right now and they make no noise.
might want to keep looking for the cause of knocking.

Re: OMC Stern Drive

Usually knocking is caused by broken gear teeth in the upper. 'nutcase

Re: OMC Stern Drive

Okay guys, I found an upper gear case and I'm ready to start this project of removing mine and installing the one I bought. I have an OMC 1977 sterndrive and I'm asking for all the help I can get as this is the first time I try to attempt this. I already downloaded the sterndrive manual and will try to follow instructions on the removal. If you could please give me advise on the dumb things people forget to do would be great. If certain tools are a need to have for install please let me know also. I'm so new at this that I do not even know what type of oil/lube goes in the sterndrive after I do this which means that all the help and advise will be great. I'll collect all the help I could get and start on this like Thanksgiving weekend. I'll probably drain the oil tomorrow and hopefully I don'd screw that up, hahahah. Well, thanks in advance

Re: OMC Stern Drive

If you remove the upper drain plug (right side, ~12" from top) the oil will typically run down the drive all the way to the skeg. To make the job clean, stick a piece of duct tape (2" wide, 4" long), just below the plug, pressing down only the top ?" or so. Turn the lower corners of the tape into a vertical loop and stick it to itself. You now have a "funnel" that will direct the draining oil away from the drive and into a container. Remove the upper fill plug to allow air in for faster draining.

Now you can remove the screws from the top cover to have a look at the gears.

If a tooth is missing and you replace the set, it's a good idea to also replace the roller bearings and seals. I got all the bearings and seals at a local bearing supply for less than $100.

30% wear on ball gears is no problem, I wore mine down to over 50%, then welded them with hard face rod. They lasted for many years after that, and I run a performance 350, 300hp+ on a 19ft Glastron.

Thanks, I think I'll drain the oil this week on Thursday or so. You mentioned the bearings and seals, I'm ordering a gasket and seal kit for the upper gear case. I'll call them tomorrow and ask about bearings. Will I need to replace the impeller also?

make sure you use type C oil since you have the electric shift.

I have a 77 electric shift model as well on my Sea Ray and I was told the outdrive was Swiss made. I know the props are way different that the 78 stringer I have on my Starcraft.

I expect your impeller is probably somewhat worn, so it's a good idea, since you have it apart anyway.
