Re: OMC Stern Drive

I owned a 1975 OMC for 23 years. I used the type C oil in the lower case only because that is is where the electric shift coils are. In the upper two sections I used standard outdrive oil. It never caused any issues. Oh and I to have run ball gears to 50 % before replacing. Is it possible the noise may be engine related? You may want to ask if the wrong oil in the lower unit could cause a knocking. Just a thought.

Re: OMC Stern Drive

Here goaws another question. Do I have to pull the whole sterndrive off to change the upper gearcase? If I do , is aligning it back pretty difficult?

Re: OMC Stern Drive

I have a 77 electric shift model as well on my Sea Ray and I was told the outdrive was Swiss made. I know the props are way different that the 78 stringer I have on my Starcraft.

That's a good one!!! I wish I had thought of that!!!!

If you're going to major surgery on that drive, you need to get an OEM service manual.

You just CANNOT rebuild a drive from a Q&A on here!
