I have an 800 omc stern drive and it is not pumping water to the block to cool it. I suspect the pump is toast. can anyone give me info on changing the pump? It is 1982 stern.

Re: omc stern drive

You gotta split the upper and lower gear cases- the pump sits between them. Major pain in the rear! I'd recommend you find an experienced marine mechanic if you are not very familiar with stern drives.

If you are feeling lucky, grab a manual and read it carefully and follow it very carefully. I was able to change mine without removing the shift cable but I was VERY CAREFUL TO SUPPORT THE LOWER UNIT AND NEVER TO PUT TENSION ON THE SHIFT CABLE. If the impeller housing is scored, be careful not to crack the bearing assembly housing while fighting the pump housing out of it. Mine was solid but made me very nervous none the less. I'm not sure what OMC was thinking when they designed that little gem.

I'm by no means an expert, but I did this job recently and it was a bear. If I had it to do over I'd take it to a shop. It's worth the $$.

Re: omc stern drive

I have tackled this job. Not too bad so far. Found that the impeller housing was cracked, i couldnt see any other visual damage. Is there anything i should be extra careful with while assembling this baby or anything i should do while i have it apart?

Not really. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Be careful not to damage any of the seals and get a friend to help you remount the lower. It will save your back, your shift cables, and your lower seals.
