OMC Stern model and serial number

Is there a site or page that can give more info. about a certain drive if I have the model and serial number? I want to see if a drive is compatible with my old 800 series drive. It is a 800 as well.

Basically, my model is 982742 and the possible replacement is 982435. My serial # is J325526 and the possible replacement is W228972. I need to know if they are compatible. They are both from a V-8 but the gear ratio could be different. Mine is 21:17 upper and 14:26 lower. A 5.7L would be 21:16 upper and 14:26 lower. Are these interchangeable if the replacement is off a 5.7L. I don't know what it came off of other than a V-8.

Your lower will have the same gear ratio as all V8's

The upper as you have seen does change.

I have swapped upper gear sets back and forth between 21/16 and 21/17 in my 26 ft 5.7L V8 several times and can tell a slight difference that is very managable with a small prop change that fixes it just fine when I go to the 21/17. I know others on here that use V8's that have done the same.

GLMmarine dot com makes upper and lower gear sets. Here is what they say about their replacement bottom gear sets. Basically V6 and V8 are the same in the lower.

Bombardier now owns what is left of OMC. OEM parts are there for insane prices. But great pics.

Parts are here. Click on Stern Drive after you enter the site...it may ask you for an email address but it is not needed.

Drill to your model year.
