Checked my sterdrive fluid level (first run of summer) and it dawned on me that if it needed topped off I did not have anything to do it with.

Went to buy fluid and got confused. Only fluid I found says not to mix it with different brands. Problem is that I don't know the brand of fulid in the drive right now, so how can I make sure I don't mix brands?

How important is it not to mix brands, and whta spec fluid is best for the OMC Cobra drive?

Just change the oil in the drive and use the correct gear lube for your drive (Drives cost a lot of money if the break).
Once you change the oil in the drive you will know what you have. If it needs topped off for some reason, you have a leak and it needs to be found ASAP or you will start getting water in the drive.

NEVER MIX BRANDS OF ANY OIL.

Re: OMC sterndrive - oil

Thanks. I thought it better to ask before I needed to do anything.

I don't need to add anything, just wanted to be prepared just in case.

marinemech1 - I will check for the middle hole and re-read my SELOC before changing drive oil. But (and this may sound stupid), if I fill from the middle how do I keep it from coming back out to put the plug in?

Fill from the middle hole, when it reads full on the dipstick (just place the stick in the hole without threading it in for filling) then screw the dipstick in. That will keep most of the oil from coming out when you disconnect the pump to replace the middle fill screw.
