engine model 990221R
v8 170hp
I have been told this is a 1974

I think I need an upper gearcase for this unit. I never had an I/O before and actually this one is my uncles so I def need some help ID the parts I need.

heres the deal, I think it is the uppergear case, but here is where it is located, the part I need is inside the gear box that connects the motor once outside of the boat to the lower end. The gears inside that box have busted teeth and it looks as if a bearing seat or gear seat has been damaged from some mishap.

If someone could let me know exacly what that gearcase is called I would appericate it. Also can you readily get pieces for something this old? What else will match up with this system.

I should also note that this eletric shift system.

Sounds like it’s an upper gear case.. Is this an 800 series stringer ? If so the parts for these are very expensive, especially if it has a worm gear in it for steering.. I had one of these and had nothing but problems with it….I consider it to be the worst outdrive ever made !!! If you do decide to fix it be sure, and I mean very sure that you put all the shims in the way they were. If there is a slight mess up the first time you take it out you will have to buy a whole new drive ! If you are not an experienced tech…stay away from this job. I would recommend if you are to do this, that you get a complete used assembly. Expect to pay some big money on this drive. I don’t mean to discourage you (we may not even be talking about the same drive) but these are not simple like a merc. Ebay has parts for these but be very sure you get the right gear ratio. GOOD LUCK !!!!

Does it have little finger like things coming out of the boat to turn the outdrive? If so it probably is..AndI think they did not start making the cobras until the late 70’s…but don’t quote me on that. I am sure more people will respond to the post that know much more than I. for your sake I hope it’s a cobra ! If it is an 800 I have manuals that show every gear, and washer, but mine was a 71 so I don’t know if it would help.
I’ll try to keep up with the post …..

I have a 1970 in the shop right now. It could also be a OMC High Profile O/D. To tell the difference can be as simple as getting a manual or looking at how high the O/D sits on the transom. Mine is being completly rebuilt at a cost of 2500.00 mostly parts. Unless your are gonna repower your boat you have no choice but to rebuild or replace it with the same. Also note that I've been waiting 2 months for the ball gear and shaft.

yes it does have little fingers sticking out to turn the outdrive. Does that make it an 800 stinger?

AS of how high it sits on the transom it seems low to me, but I never owned a I/O so my judgement really is not that good.

It does have a big rubber seal all around the hole that connects it to the boat if that helps at all. I think someone called it a bellows.

Also I cannot find any numbers on the lower unit itself. How would I be able to id positivtley and what years would iterchage with it, once idetified.

Try not to get discouraged on this drive. I have a 76 Galaxie with a 190 HP version of this drive. I rebuilt the lower unit myself. The forward drive spring was broke. Get a Seloc manual for it and be real carefull when you take it apart. If you are even an average mechanic, it shouldn't blow up in your face. I have a parts source out here on the west coast that seems to have everything, and he knows a whole lot about these drives. Rode'sway Boats, Inc.
521 E. Arrow Hwy. Sounds like a series 800 to me also. If it has the rubber seal around it is not a Corba. I do not think the Cobra came out until 1988 or 1989. In 1980 the serries 400 was for the 4 cly 120 and 140 hp. Serries 800 was for the 185, 200, and 230. The upper gear box has a 21:17 gear ratio. The cost for a complete rebuilt unit with a 1 year warranty is about $1800 to $2250 and will cost about 200 to get installed. Dealers I have talk to say they can fix for $800 up depending on parts needed. On this board click on sterndrives and put in info and they will give you some prices with core charge and shipping. Good luck. I had a serries 400 since 1980 and this year is first problem I have had.

Re: OMC stren drive part id

I do not have your exact engine model but these should be pretty close, from a 1980 book.
Series 800 models, 185 HP.
Upper gear 21:17.
Lower gear ratio 14:26.
Overall ratio 1.49

One revolution of ball gear shaft (input shaft) results in 0.67 revolutions of prop shaft.

1.49 revolutions of ball gear shaft results in revolution of prop shaft
