OMC Stringer Anode

I saw this picture below on Ebay. It is pretty close in age to mine, 1976. In part of the description the seller says this:

"The only thing it could use is a new anode/exhaust piece. This one is sacrificed about 50%."

This will be the first time I have heard this part described as an Anode. Everyone I have seen to date is painted and nowhere near the corrosion shown by this picture. Is this drive actually older than he claims when maybe it was an anode? Any thoughts on this small mystery?. Mystery to me at least.

I have never heard of that being refered to as an anode before. Earlier OMC drives mounted one directly to the transom and the later drives bolted one to the bottom of the intermediate housing. Also does it look like the exaust housing is swollen out around where the water pump is or is it just my bad eyesight?

I think it is the angle of the dangle with the photograph. It also looks like he did not line up the Upper Gearcase before he took the picture. That could also cause an elipital collision, HeHeHe

The Exhaust/Water Intake/Rudder combo thingy is somewhat smaller that the one I have on mine. What I an really having a hard time with is the condition of the part. It draws water from the front screen and Exhaust out the back. I find hard to believe that it would still be functioning.

I have both Anodes on mine. The rectangular one beneath the Intermediate mounted to the Transom and the Block Anode mounted to the bottom of the Intermediate.

My boat is powered by a Mercruiser Engine. Because of that and some of the odd things about the rest of my power plant, a certain Admiral has coined my boat "Junkyard Dog". Can't really say the phrase is inappropriate. :'(

Wild guess is that it could be Galvanic Corrosion. Possible causes Exhaust Cover Spring missing, missing anode on Intermediate. Any other guesses or for sures?

To my knowledge that piece is not anodic. It is both a steering trim tab and exhaust outlet. It appears to have suffered extreme corrosion but the rest of the drive does not reflect this.

I simply do not know what conclusion to draw.

I will say one thing about my Rudder I am repainting now. The paint stripper acts differently than the other Aluminum Parts I have prepared for painting. I may know know more when I apply the Spruce Aluminum Cleaner and Prep chemicals to it. The stripper dulls the raw surface of the Rudder where it has sort of polished the other parts I have done. Who knows, the adventure continues!

I found a picture of a Rudder that shows me how something like that could corrode but still function.
