Omc stringer info

I have 3 1977 omc stringer lower units I'm trying to find any info on the shaft and springs for the electric shift the lower on the boat only has forward and is having issues with that now I bought two used lowers and the springs fell out of them the first one I got from a marine salvage yard it lasted half the season last year and the pinion gear decided it was done the second one I bought from a private sale I got the 4 cylinder upper off to swap the lower to my 190 upper and both springs fell out when I was dumping the fluid out we hooked power to both forward and reverse when I bought it and they seemed to grab I'm guessing the springs and pins lock it in or something any info on them where to get them and how they are properly assembled would be greatly appreciated

Get the oem manual. And a 2foot long HUGE snap ring plier set. You will need both to work on these things, also shimming guages if you can find them. If I remember right I thought the springs were in an assembly.
