Well it finally happened. I was doing about 30mph when the motor came to a dead stop. Everything is locked up, can’t imagine it’s a motor issue since it runs so good and the boat only has 170 hours on it. I’ll be pulling the leg off today to see what I can see. The boat is a 1977 SeaRay srv 195 with 170 original hours. It was given to me by my grandpa who stored it in a barn for the last 40 years.

is it common for these units to do this? All the drive oil was replaced at the beginning of the season.

With the drive down remove the drain screws from the upper and lower gear cases, one of them will have water mixed with glitter.
Also the drain screw for the intermediate housing.

^^^^ what he said:

And, pull the drive from the boat. Turn the engine on and see if it starts. If it does, you can reasonably guess the problem is in the drive.

Separate the upper from the lower. Using your hands or a tool, try turning the ball gear on the upper. If that rotates fairly easily, then your problem is probably in the lower. If it doesn't move, then your problem is probably in the upper.

There is no drain screw for the intermediate housing. Got the leg off and the upper and lower both spin. Engine still won’ budge.

Found the problem. Intermediate shaft bearings are froze. Looks like there was no oil in it. Is the oil just for those 2 bearings?

Yup and it's a minimal amt of oil in there .

Check the splines on the shaft and engine coupler while you are in that deep.

Quite honestly , it could be way worse . You're lucky

The shaft should come out with the rear bearing cup. The front one may give some trouble if it spun in the housing. Arc weld a bead on the inside of the cup to shrink it which should help. Hopefully the front of where the front bearing seats did not get worn.

The front cup is stuck. I wondering if normal gear oil should be used instead of the electric shift oil for those bearings. Or maybe even packing them with grease beforehand
