OMC Stringer outdrive questions

I have a 1986 Searay 24' with a 302 V-8 Ford and OMC Stringer outdrive. I have a couple of problems with this boat.

It starts great, runs great at low rpm. But once you punch the gas, the boat bogs and acts as if the motor siezes, as it abruptly stops running. Then with much cranking, it will start again, only to do the same thing. We simply wanted to turn around and go back to port, but it finally wouldnt start.
We were about 500 feet from shore and needed a tow in to the marina. The prop turns easily. The motor starts on shore and runs great. What do you think.

My cousin says he found a tear in a boot that leads into the outdrive and is suspecting a corroded outdrive. He also says he suspects the manifolds are internally cracked. Does this sound like he is on the right track?

How do I pull the outdrive? There is a cable that has a boot, which is very stuck in the outdrive mount on the boat. Do I disconnect this inside the outdrive somehow? Or inside the boat. I have pulled the outdrive as far as this cable would allow.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: OMC Stringer outdrive questions

It doesn't sound like the drive is the problem. It could be water in the fuel. Or the ignition coil is bad. Maybe the points/condenser.
Turn on the ignition and start the motor.Let it run and reach over see how hot the coil is.Running under a load they can fail. The points might be closing when hot or the cond might be bad.
If there is a tear in the boot it should only leak water in the boat.
The manifolds can be checked.Use a garden hose and run water thru them. If it comes out the center exit then they are cracked. You might have to take them off.Jerry

Re: OMC Stringer outdrive questions

We need more info to narrow down your issues. Did this just start happening recently, or has it been going on for a while? Did it start suddenly, or a gradual worstening? Was it winterized? When was it last tuned-up? Oil, filter, fuel filter, points & cond, cap & rotor, plugs & wires? Timing checked?

Can you post pics of the OD showing the tear and cable?

The more info you give the guys here to work with, the better and faster answers you'll get. :D

Remember: Garbage in = garbage out! :D:D
