How do you remove replace the engine side of the cables. I got one, actually have two of the old boats with these drives. They work fine. This one when I got it some ()**&& had wound the cables the wrong way on the pulley at the engine. They replaced the boot and did that. Not sure why it had to come out unless they put different cables in at the same time. Anyway, it turns left when you turn the wheel right and visa-versa.. I have the I/O off, see the c-clip on the gear but am not sure where to go next. Any comments please?

Is it possible that the cable was twisted and reinstalled on the itermediate housing end, upside down? I've had mine off before but cannot remember if that is possible to do?

the cable isn't wound wrong. OMC made LH worm gears and RH worm gears.
They also made helm steering assemblies for each direction.
You have an outdrive with the opposite worm gear in the upper gear housing to the helm assembly on the boat.

Your options are:
1. change the worm gear in the upper gear box.
2. flip the cable drum at the helm (this requires drilling a new hole through the helm shaft)

not possible.
But it can be done at the helm end if there is room under the dash, and if a new hole is drilled through the helm shaft.

I am sure it was the worm gear as mentioned and the previous owner had replaced the unit with a opposite worm gear. I was able to pull all the cable off the helm and then rewind it in the opposite direction (pain but possible) without drilling anything!

That just goes to show you that good things do not always happen overnight.:p

I hope you forced some lube down those cableways while you were at it?
