Hello everyone! First time poster here looking for some help. I have a 79 crestliner with a 200 horse with a OMC stern drive. The engine starts right up and sounds good. However, when you shift in forward or reverse there is a clicking noise in the top of the upper drive area and the prop does not engage. I am new to the I/O engines and outdrives - mostly just experience w/ outboards. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...

Did you Just buy this boat,..??

Are you a Mechanic,..??

You'll be needing All the #s,+ other info on your motor,+ drive for anybody to give you specfic answers....
I don't do OMCs at All,... Especially the old antique Stringer Drives,... aka. Your's.....
But somebody will be along,...

The prognosis isn't very good,.....

I know it doesn't say 200 horse on the valve cover. Anyway drives are the same. You have a manual? O.e.m manual the best, Seloc is second best, Claymor is toilet paper. What you have my friend is a stringer. Does the drive tilt up? If it does tilt it up all the way. You should see what appears to be knuckle gears. They look like fingers. How do they look maybe you can post a picture. If they are all worn down that could be your problem.

You can see a picture of them before you get the manual at Doug Russel web site or brp website. Now if it isn't the finger gears you have a stripped out water shaft .Your gonna find out one way or the other cause that boat ain't going nowhere fast till you fix the problem.

You say the boat starts good. Does it over heat? When you run the boat on the trailer and your in the boat; look down at the drive you see a **** stream on the finger gears? Thats called a telltale stream. If yes, you have the water pump working if not shut it off and don't start it till you put in a new impeller.

And when you have the water pump out you'll know if the shaft is stripped cause it has to come out with the water pump. Never ,ever, never, start this boat without water going to the drive on muffs, or in the water. Never, ever never, run it with the drive up. Only all the way down. And if the tilt don't work and i bet it don't make sure the battery is fully charged. Fully charged.

When i repeat something it's for a reason cause I want you to know it's important. If the tilt don't work well fix that too. Hope you can follow instructions. I learned what i know the hard way. Post the results and in a week well get the boat in the water if you didn't fry the motor bye not putting water to it. Good luck.

I just gave up as it looked like one big sentence that I could not read.
:D;)

All kidding aside, please use simple grammar/punctuation rules as it helps us all out. Back to the OP.

as Bond-O said, we will need the specifics of the engine and drive before anyone can give you specific help. Does it go into gear but just never engage or does it just click but will never go into gear?

I didn't have any problem reading through and sounded like pretty good post my friend so now go ahead and check all those things because being the owner of a STRINGER you'll have to learn that stuff for yourself and a little information from guys on the forum can go a long way so c'mon guys don't knock a good post because punctuation spelling and grammer who cares.

I can get thru a few spelling, grammAr and punctuation errors. I won't read a post that is all caps or all run together. I'm apparently not the only one who finds that intolerable.
