After I purchased my motor about 6 yrs ago (1995 175 HP OPro), I also purchased Triple guard grease, Adhesive M, and Gasket Sealer from OMC dealer. This year she's due a water pump and the grease is used up, the cap is off the adhesive M,and the gasket sealer is kinda crusty. What 3M, Dupont, Permatex, etc... products I probably have on the shelf can I substitute for my biannual spring ritual (and hernia)!
Thanks

Re: OMC substitutions

OMC type-M is 3M #847, but is only available at the johnrude shop....pain in the buttt.
I'm a big fan of th J/E gasket sealer too.
If ya have any Lubriplate 1200-2, or 1242 grease, it'll cover about all for grease jobs.

Re: OMC substitutions

When I bought the impeller for my 55hp I asked the guy about the sealer for the lower unit and he said not to worry about it. When I had the foot off I could see that it wasn't used last time. Do I need to pull it off and seal it? You can see it blow ex gas out the joint when reving the motor at the lake. Is there supposed to be ex gas in that area or did I displace the upper seal on the exhaust extension ? there were signs of ex crud on top of the impeller hsg and the shift housing when I had it apart.

Thanks

Thanks guys
Just being frugal (and a bit lazy) tryin not to duplicate what I might already have on the shelf.
For < $20, I'll wait for my allowance from the Mrs. and just drink cheaper beer this weekend during the clean and jerk of the LU.

Re: OMC substitutions

I've also been wondering about substitutions for this stuff. Not necessarily for being frugal (although frugal is good) but because the dealers in this area just don't carry the stuff and don't plan to. The parts folks say they use stuff from the local auto store but won't give specifics. (Isn't it wonderful to know they're not following SOP on some poor guy's engine?)

What to substitute depends on the need to have it gasoline resistant. For example, a good thread protector/sealer/locker is high temp silicone, life seal or some type of eurathane sealent. But this won't work if it's in contact with gas.

Perm-a-tex is a good gasket and thread sealer which resists gas. But it can't be used in all marine applications.

The stuff I've been wondering about is:
OMC Adhesive M (No idea what this is)
OMC Pipe Sealent with Teflon (form-a-gasket?)
OMC Screw Lock (Loctite?)
OMC Locquic & Primer (Loctite Red?)
OMC Gel Seal
Gasoila Sealer (Form-a-gasket #2?)
OMC Gasket Sealing Compound (Aviation Form-a-Gasket)
OMC Gasket Remover (Acetone, 3m adhesive remover?)
OMC Moly Lube (Any synthetic hi temp/pressure grease or automotive bearing grease with moly?)
OMC Nut Lock (Loctite for Bolts?)
OMC Screw Lock (Loctite for Screws?)
OMC Needle Bearing Assembly Grease (no idea)
OMC HT 400 (huh?)

In all fairness, they do carry triple-guard grease and gear/trim lubes. It's just annoying to go to a bonafide dealer and they don't carry any of this stuff.

It would really be appreciated you folks could give me an idea of acceptable substitutes. I hate surprises! :)

Thanks!

Re: OMC substitutions

Please let me throw a few more questions out there: Does YOUR Johnson/Evinrude dealer carry the stuff listed in the previous post, and if not, where do you get it from? Any mail order suppliers carry it?

Re: OMC substitutions

One substitution I use for needle bearing assembly grease is Vaseline. Results in some funny looks when someone sees it on the bench, but it liquifies quickly in the motor and is easily washed out by the gas. The last tube of needle bearing assembly grease I did buy look and smelled an awful lot like Vaseline...

- Scott
