OMC Tach Wiring

89 OMC 4.3 - I am trying to wire the tach. It has 4 wires. I know the red is positive and the black negative. The old tach had 1 grey wire going to it. The new tack has a green and white wire in addition to the red and black. Does the grey tach wire coming from the engine go to the green or white wire on the tach? What is the wire left over for?

Thanks

Re: OMC Tach Wiring

Didn't that new tach have any instructions with it?
Who manufactured it? Is it a marine tach?
All tachs are not the same. WE NEED SOME INFO about your tach.

Instruction are those things you read when what they go to doens't work after you've tried everything ;)

On OMC's the gray wire comes off the neg side of the coil for the tach, maybe the leftover wire is for a light?

Re: OMC Tach Wiring

Finally got a chance to look at the Tach - it is a Pro Series marine tach. It came with the boat, and I do not have instructions. I searched online but couldn't find instructions on installing ProSeries marine gauges. I know that the grey wire is the incoming tach wire, but I don't know if it goes to the green or white wire on the tach.

And NOW you say :

Got me confused.
I checked Faria and Teleflex and neither of them have wires coming out of the tach, let alone that color.
You normally have a purple wire for 12V+, black for Neg., and gray for sender on every tach I've ever seen.
Is a picture of the back of the tach possible?

Re: OMC Tach Wiring

Well, I actually just sold the boat!!! She was a good starter, and I learned alot working on it. I guess they can figure out the tach. I would imagine that they can hook the grey wire up to one of the two remaining wires on the tach. If it works, the wiring is correct. If not, swap them! Thanks everyone for the OMC help. I'm now officially Merc man from here on out. d:)
