OMC tilt clutch housing seal

i am putting new seals in the clutch housing, the seal that is next to the spur gear is thicker in width than the one i took out, it fits the housing diameter wize, just wondering for those have replaced this seal, are the NEW one suppose to be this way? thanks

Without seeing all the pieces, I would speculate it is supposed to be that way. It may be an improvement over the original as those gear boxes are known to leak thru that seal.

The reason they leaked is because the shaft hole, as time went by, would get elongated with the weight of the outdrive beating down on it constantly in transit. A wider seal may be an attempt to remedy the leaking. Also, be sure to use two gaskets on the gear box cover plate.

The difference from here is pre 80 or 81 and up.

Look closely. Not sure that it matters but it might.
