OMC Tilt

I have a 1983 Rinker 17' with a 2.3 liter OMC and stringer drive. My tilt won't lift up the drive without assistance from someone else. How does this tilt work? I cant find hardly any information on it on the web. Also, after I put it in reverse and try to give it a little throttle it will kick the drive unit out from the engine. Would the tilt being bad have anything to with that? Thanks for any information.

Go to the adults only at the top of this outdrive forum and click on the OMC info and get the manual. Might be the clutches in the gear box on the transom assly. Those are known to leak the oil out and let the water in.

Thanks, that was the first time I looked in that one surprisingly. The manuals are very descriptive, but the pictures are hard to see (I'm more of a picture looker then a reader). I did change the oil in everything last year and some of them were milky, but I don't recall that one being milky at all.

There's a worm gear drive coupled to the electric motor. The driven gear is on a common shaft with a stack of clutch pates. The stainless gear that drives the bronze quadrant is driven by clutch friction.

The clutch plates may be worn, then will slip. Mine did. I took the stack apart, added a washer at the end, put everythng back, added 10W30 oil, was fine ever since.

There are also several plastic washers that one would wonder if they could ever do any good. They are ALL part of the system. You will also need to drain the water out and replace with oil after every outing.

Big problem is the tilt clutch housing leaks. Period it leaks. You can't fix it so you will have to learn to live with it. So the oil and after the oil the water travels up the shaft in to the motor. Rust and corrosion in the bushings and on the brushes.

Re: OMC Tilt

just remove the clutches soak them in gas or solvent overnight then reinstall them and instead of oil pack the entire unit with marine grade grease it will help the water intrusion problem and you will only have to drain water and repack once a year if the boat is trailered also the gasket on the housing should be doubled they dont frekin tell you that though i did this to mine and it operated smoothier than ever good luck :D

Thanks for the replies everyone. Where would I go to find a gasket for the housing? Can I just make one, or does it use a special material?

I used a tube of Permatex silicone gasket the last time I worked on mine, it lasted for years.
