Does anyone know if it is possible to get the special OMC tools to rebuild the lower unit?

They're on EBay all the time, But unless you plan on making a serious hobby of it or small business, I'm not sure it's worth it. Just send the unit out.

No kiddin'!!
KaGee is right. I thought the same til I priced the tools , not to mention not having the finese to do the job.
Send it to a certified OMC mech.(If you can find one close). If they are any good at all they will warranty their work.
Getting ready to send off mine to Canada.(yep , no one in my area period). OMC stuff-Cobra Drives- is hard to find a qualified mechanic to do the job.
Good Luck. :)

At $70.00 an hour it adds up real fast on a drive. If you can pick up the tools, use them, and then sell them right back on ebay, you're well ahead of the game.

If your mechanical abilities are up to the task, it is certainly worth it. However, shimming the upper and lower bearings is not up to everybodies ability. You have to follow your manual to the letter and not try any short cuts. It's a $1500 hit for an upper and $1500 for a lower unit if you don't do it correctly.

i didnt use any of the special tools everything i used was right in my tool box, how ever- i did use a magnetic clamp on dial indicator and plastigauge on the shims and bearings. the only real tool is the prop shaft bearing housing puller. an adjustable long arm bearing puller with the long skinny arms works good! but im a pretty good intuitive guy thats resourceful!

RedRanger, before you send your drive off to Canada, you should know that there is a top notch expert right here in Portland Or. He gets units in from dealers and individuals from all over the country including alaska. If you are interested, I give you his # and you can call and talk to him.

For us neophytes, can you add some detail as to what a magnetic clamp on dial indicator is, where you needed it & how you used it?

Also, what is plastigauge that you used on the shims and bearings?

Thanks for the additional details! Might help some beginers with a good manual and parts catalogue (and more time than money) guage whether or not to tackle something like this.

with out the tools it does not matter if its a omc/merc or volvo

Your just useing your judgement to set the preloads and gear backlash and hopeing for the best

I have only resealed and checked the backlash and rolling torque on 2 merc drives and i am glad i had a teacher that new how to show you what the service manual REALLY ment :)

tommays
