I am reading Stuart's article on adjusting OMC's shifting linkage. It says, "Remove outdrive, replace the transom bracket shift cable if outer jacket is ribbed. Use the appropriate service manual." I don't know what "If outer jacket is ribbed" means. What is the outer jacket? My cable looks like this:

Do I need to replace the cable? I'm asking all this because I have had a lot of gear grinding and thumping going into reverse on my 89 OMC 4.3. Once I finish all my other problems/projects, I plan on completing Stuart's adjustment.

You don't have a ribbed cable, unless the boat has been in storage since about 1987.We used them all up.Tryng to make Cobras shift. The cable I am talking about is inside "N" in your picture.

DHP

DHPMARINE - Are you the infamous Stuart? Thanks for the info. I'll assume that I don't have the old cable, especially since it shifted fine for a couple years before the trouble started.
