OMC Trim add on kit for 79 55hp part # 172833

I have a 79 Johnson 55hp. Just rebuilt it and got it running right.
Found a OMC tilt kit 172833 new in box. The unit is a motor and cylinder that bolts to the side of the transom bracket with 2 brackets.
I know this is designed to lift the outboard at rest. What would happen if I tried to use it underway? Is it strong enough to hold trim position without transom the pin latched ? I'm trying to figure out if I installed it, could I use it as you would a normal trim or would it damage the unit? Even if it wasnt strong enough to use while under power.
Probably doesn't matter but outboard is installed on a 16' jonboat.

I have seen a very similar unit for old Force engines. It is designed only to lift the engine at rest. Typically there are pressure relief valves and if you try to use the unit while underway it simply will not do anything. However you probably will heat the motor and aerate the oil.

OMC also mad a trim/tilt unit that had a bracket bolting across the pivot and two separate cylinders.

I looked up OMC trim unit and saw the 2 cylinder unit. Was thinking that a lot of the 40- 50hp trim units have just 1 cylinder and a similar size and thought maybe it could handle it. If I did try it I wouldn't want to blow the seals out or burn the motor up.

My 85 90 hp has trim only. It will hold the motor up or out at idle speeds. Anything more and the motor will push the cylinder in or down real fast.

Sometimes you just forget to lower it.
