OMC Trim Question

My 98 OMC trim will trim up and down fine at the motor. It will only trim up at the benical. I installed a new benical switch because the wires on the old one broke like they do from ware. All I can think is bad contact at the modular plug, bad brand new switch or a broken wire in the line between the benical and the motor. I'm going to work on it this weekend. Any other ideas?

Re: OMC Trim Question

Could be many dirty contacts from the engine to binacle/trim lever.

I would first check the big red plug and make sure all the connections there are clean.
Then check the wire that goes to control box/or binnacle and see if there is currant going there.
If its working at motor end it can only be bad wires.
Now wiring breaking from ware sounds a bit odd, do you mean corrosion or from chaffing . ?

Sounds like a prob in the wiring coming from the binacle switch. If your wiring is all orginal, you may not have the big red plug.

Is this OMC an outboard or I/O?

It's a 1998 Johnson 225 outboard. Off the top of my head I think the model number is 225TXEC. It's an Ocean Runner.

As far as what I meant by wear (sorry for the typo "ware") the lead wire "whip" from the binnacle switch to the first plug flexes each time the throttle lever is pushed forward or back. After time, this flexing has a tendency to cause the wire(s) in the whip to break.

Re: OMC Trim Question

The green "down" wire had pulled out of the back of the modular plug under my console. It looked as if it was never properly crimped into the pin. I took the plug apart, slid the wire back on, crimped it in place and put the plug back together. It works as it should. Thanks for the comments.
