Hey guys,

I just got a whaler rage 15 with an OMC turbojet 115 engine. At higher RPMs it seems to run fairly smooth, but around idle it sounds like it is going to explode!

It sounds like the banging is coming from the gearbox. It is even bogging the engine down when it bangs and sometimes even cuts it off. I bought some OMC HPF gear oil today, but couldn't get the drain plug off to install it. I am determined to get it done tomorrow! What suggestions do you guys have for when I change the gear oil? Can I flush with water? Is the banging normal? should I give up now and buy new gearing?

Thanks in advance!

If you are running it out of water just using the flusher fitting, yes, those straight cut gears are very noisy. In the water at the 1000-1200 rpm idle, there should be very little noise.

I meant to flush the actual gear oil chamber with water, just to rinse out any gunk or chips. I am guessing this is not recommended?

Nope! The only thing that unit should ever see is the appropriate lubricant. Certainly never water!
