OMC Type C gear oil necessary?

I inherited a 1973 Johnson 9.5 and want to change the gear case oil before the season. There is a sticker on the motor that states "Use OMC Type C gear oil".

I've read this type of oil is necessary for electric shift models but is this oil necessary on this little fella?

I wasn't able to find Type C here locally.

No need. Just get marine gear oil/hypoid oil, etc....

The manufacturer's recommendation might still be valid, might not. Sierra (for one) markets a Type C, Google is your friend ...

I have a little 1967 Johnson 3hp Folder which also says to use Type C oil. Not sure why they recommended it. I use 80-90wt marine gear lube and have had no problems.

Over the years parts and lubricants have been superceded to better products as they come available.

For all manual shift J-E outboards, use HPF- Pro or you can use the older oils such as HiVis or HPF-Ultra

I have a little 1967 Johnson 3hp Folder which also says to use Type C oil. Not sure why they recommended it. I use 80-90wt marine gear lube and have had no problems.

The reason for that is because at the time, there was no HiVis 80/90w gearcase lube. OMC issued a bulletin later in years that the thin "Type C" was being slung off of the gears and bearing surfaces at higher rpms and to use the new improved thicker HiVis lube.

Bottom line..... If the engine is a straight mechanical shift model, use the HiVis 80/90w gearlube.
