Re: OMC Upper deive questions

It sounds like the last "installer" may have filled the cavity with epoxy or JB weld, rather than just some sealant on the edge.

Re: OMC Upper deive questions

Ok I got it all apart. what is odd. I don't see anything that looks like it was leaking water INTO the drive.

THe impeller had been changed. BUT I think it was a crappy job. looks like Impeller only nothing else.. including seals.. it was all siliconed. The on on the other drive I have looks brand new so I am going to swap that ALL over to the old drive.

Remember the old upper is the tall one the new is the low profile one. the impllers look the same are they? just want to be sure.

The tall upper is in way better shape I am thinking of using that one and swaping all the gears etc over to it.

is there anything I should watch out for on that swap? anything that would stop me from being able to do that? I KNOW the gear ratios are different. Low has 22 teeth on the lower gear the Tall has 16 so I will have to swap those out.

One last thing there was not a o-ring on the water pump shaft (right above the impeller) in the groove. there was a "rubber band" looking thing with splines on the inside .. is that correct?

Thanks again

There is the driveshaft retainer, part #93 that fits in the groove, then the driveshaft seal part #80 (rubber band thing) goes onto the splines.

Not sure about putting low pro parts in a high pro upper. Are the driveshafts ect. the same length? My manual shows 2 part #s for the pump shaft, 909114 & 908087. Same for the upper driveshaft, #382883 & 981220. I suspect there may be more differences between the high & low profile drives.

Re: OMC Upper deive questions

Ok so I decide JUST IN CASE to use the old housing (same one that I was running) I get it ALL back together.. all went pretty smooth although getting the seals on the pinion shaft (the vertical one) was kind of a pain. there must be a special seal installer for that.. I have dozens but NONE fit right.

anyways I get it all together. with the Brand new impeller all new seals etc. and I decide ... what the heck clean it up and paint it..... so I start removing the old paint.. I get to one spot and something is fishey.... JB WELD.... YEP looks like someone tried to repair a cracked housing... NOW I know why I got such a good deal on the boat. someone did NOT want to replace the upper.

So I am Not sure that it was leaking there. and where the crack goes on the inside, I looked around while I was in there and didn;t see anything.. but that does not mean it's not there...

so I guess tomorrow I'll be swaping over to the housing from the Tall unit. I took measurements and things look the same... I sure hope so.... or I'll be in the market for a new UPPER..

One good thing second time is ALWAYS easier... at least I know what I am doing now.

I'm going to have a beer or 3 now..
