Yeah, I would stay away. No longer made. I have an OMC 800, some say its a good lil work horse but its prone to so many problems with water getting in the drive, tilt/clutch mechanism problems, impeller splines goin, I could go on and on. I would stay away and go for a Merc as parts are everywhere. As far as going with new, I wold take a Volvo over the Merc.

Re: OMC What do you think about

omc products ben around for many years and they last forever.in fact the first ever outboard was made by Ole Evinrude in 1907 and in 1921 they join forces with johnson outboards creating OMC this would help get through the great depression my friend has a 1942 johnson and it still runs great but make sure you stay away from the fitched ram injection models. these models had some problems due to the fact they were thrown together to try to meet the E.P.A's new emission standerds(the EPA killed OMC just like they killed 70's mucal cars) and also stay away from the johnson four strokes these were never made by OMC but they were made by BRP (the company that bought them out).the reson you want to say away from them or any 4 stroke outboard is because there real heavy and slugish im talking 100's pounds heavier. also 4 stroke outboard are much harder to fix and only ben around for about 6 years so they still have some bugs in them inless its a stern drive 4 stroke then its fine. OMC has also has alot of amazing history they broke the water speed records a number of time and they were also the only outboard to ever sell a V8 300 horse power outboard.the first time your friend slames that throttal down he will fall right in love the power and speed is just amazing.in fact all the way up untill the EPA killed OMC in 2002 they were the fastest boat motors you could buy and still are to this day.the company went bankrupt in 2002 becuse they had so many problems with there fitched ram injection so now you have BRP evinrudes and johnsons which are the fasttest outboards you can buy right now and also BRP is the only company that still makes 2 strokes heres there site http://www.brp.com/ and aslo heres the story of the first evinrude http://www.naha.stolaf.edu/pubs/nas/volume12/vol12_9.htm so if you see a carburated OMC its going to be fast and reliable and they did make some smoke.but if you want a clean boat motor you could always get a slow 4 stroke outboard.im not to sure about Volvo or Mercruiser but i know both ben around for a while and make long lasting 4 stroke stern drives.

Re: OMC What do you think about

Yeah he was asking about OMC I/O's.

I would consider a new ETEC Evinrude outboard though...those are pretty cool.

There's really not a LOT "wrong" with the OMC Cobra or Stringer for that matter if properly set up and maintained.

The problem is that if you have to have someone else fix it....they'll say, "OMC huh? Well let'$ take a look.....I can probably fix it$$$" Very few marine service depts want to mess with them.....

You are MUCH better off with a Mercruiser or a Volvo. And make it a fairly late model one too.

The EPA didn't kill OMC by the way.....it committed suicide by not changing with the times quickly enough.....

NO one would ever say this OMC products ben around longer then any other outboard inboard or stern drive.they are vary well know in the boating world.and if they did say this then you shoudint get your boat fixed there

Re: OMC What do you think about

yes but what you did see was that they were having problems with there fitches the only reson these models were made was to meet the new emissions laws but they failed just like mecury did when they tryed to make a 2 stroke outboard to meet the new emissions laws and was having soo many problwms but mercs quickly turned to slow 4 strokes outboards before they lost it all

Re: OMC What do you think about

hitace, don't go spouting a bunch of BS from a fresh water fishing editor, has nothing to do with reality. The other thing is you only have 4 posts and all in this thread and all about OUTBOARDS. You obviously know nothing about OMC, or the sterndrives. So go find the Johnson/Evenrude forum and spout your knowledge.

Re: OMC What do you think about

"OMC's Ficht fuel injected engines were introduced in 1997 in response to EPA requirements for cleaner-burning, fuel-efficient marine power. Ficht engines, however, were plagued with problems that OMC has admitted helped put them in the red due to numerous costly "upgrades" and engine redesign. The resulting customer ill will led to decreased sales even though later models were redesigned and improved."

I still want to know what this has to do with buying an OMC sterndrive or not.

Is there an alcohol problem here?

Chuck,

I figured it was I/O since you did post it in the I/O forum and were asking about Mercruisers and Volvos.

Why are you asking someone elses question in a different thread, why did it turn to outboards. And where is "New Posts"?

This whole thread is wierd!!!!!

Re: OMC What do you think about

A 460 King Cobra pushed my Four Winns Liberator to 60 mph for almost 20 years with somewhat good reliability. There was only one thing wrong with it. Some critical parts are no longer available. As time goes on more and more parts will become unavailable for ALL the OMC sterndrive types.

OMC is gone and is not coming back (especially where stern drives are concerned... I'm glad Evinrude/Johnson is still around though)

I've moved on.

Tell your friend the only (stern drive) options now are Volvo and Mercruiser.

I chose Mercruiser. I would have also been happy with a VP.

This whole thread is wierd!!!!!

I was hoping for more imput concerning OMC and thus I ask the survey Questions in a new thread, including Alpha One and Bravo. I knew OMC was out of buisness and wondered if there were any parts or aftermarket suppliers. jon9 ask about OMC "Newbie Bowrider Advice" as he is considering to purchase a 1991 Four Winns Freedom 180. I have read and heard about a lot of problems people are having with the Bravo Outdrives so I was just wondering if they were isolated or epidemic and to keep it fair I did it in the form of a survey.

Hitace jumped in with his big defence and spiel about OMC assuming we were talking Outboards. That could have been my fault for not being clear that I was talking about I/O 's and hadn't even thought about outboards.

New Posts is at the top of the page in the first dark Blue Line.

I hope I have answered your questions. If I was wrong or confused you by starting this new thread I apologize.
