JB,

I'd be inlined to believe it also. I've heard and read on this forum that the consensus is that OMC made better smaller engines than Merc through the years - although I guess everything is debatable..

Howe many Mercs have you owned through the years?

I only had one Merc, 2Cycle.

It was a 1999 90hp and I didn't like it. Rough idle and rough at low speeds.

It was on my son's Montauk. My identical Montauk with a Suzi DF70 would keep up with it and burn half the fuel. I didn't mess with it; I let the Mercsperts do that.

Please don't misunderstand. I think Merc made some excellent engines in the pre-Brunswick days, they just wouldn't sell or last as well as those bulletproof little JohnnyRudes.

I understand where you're coming from :)

It's too bad Merc sold out. I've enjoyed reading Rodengen's biography of Kiekhaefer, and it's interesting that the "fast but won't last" moniker stuck in his crawl so bad that he started the endurance runs at Lake X to refute "the enemy." It was a good read and I'd like to read the sister story of OMC. The sell to Brunswick seemed to take an immense personal toll on CK and the talent pool assembled around him.

I've never owned any of the OMC twins, but wouldn't mind shopping around for one in the future.
