hi yall, its been a while since ive been here...my 86 sunbird decided to leave me on the lake sunday, but only forward...choppy waters cruising about 20-23 mph when i heard one clunk, another, and another....but it was every 3-4 secs and then it got where it was just grinding...400 yards from shore.turned around and docked in R...no clunking or grinding whatsoever.i just drained the gearcase,a little over 2 quarts, nice n blueish green with no silver/metallic coloring...pulled the outdrive and split the upper/lower......where to next, any ideas...oh yea its a 195 sunbird 3.0/cobra:confused:

I personally would have diagnosed a little further before pulling the drive and splitting the cases... May have been just a cable, plate or even a control problem. Good that you've got no bad color in the lube tho.

So pull the top plate off and look at the ring and pinon gears. Crank the engine over and listen for anything weird, heck it may not be the drive at all.

well i pulled the outdrive, prop and carrier checked the gears and clutch...everything looks great, used a small spot mirror and flashlight to check forward clutch dog. i put new gaskets and O rings and greased the u-joints.

im beginning to think it was just the darn cable.ive heard they are extremely delicate on their adjustments...any hints?
