OMG - what a leak!

I have a 1986 Bayliner Capri Bowrider with a Volvo Penta 5.0L 275 outdrive. The engine has about 125 hours on it, but am leaking a LOT of water into the bilge. I am not sure if it through the drain plug, or through the outdrive itself. I noticed a separation between the outdrive and the transom, and caulked it to make it better as a short term remedy. I know that there are some bolts between the sterndrive and the transom. Are those to be torqued down to a spec? Any help would be appreciated. I am getting a but tired of running the bilge pump every 4 hours to remove about 20 gallons of water.

If the transom shield is leaking, and pulled away from the transom, then the transom is rotton and needs to be replaced. It's now mush and nothing for the bolts to tighten down against.

The transom seems to be in good shape. Not the same to say for the stringers and flooring...which I plan to replace this winter. But if the transom is gone, what are we talking about for replacement, cost wise? I was only hoping to put another $2000 into this boat, since it was bought used, and the engine is in perfect condition.

I was told that there are some bolts that are to be retorqued after 150 hours on the engine, something to do with exhaust. I am not that savvy in small boat repairs or maintenance, but am looking to become so.

if the stringers and the floor (deck) are rotten.....so, most likely is the transom.

you can try to tighten the bolts.....but don is correct....there is nothing to tighten against

Got me there, never heard of anything like that on a Volvo before, and I'm a certified Volvo tech.

If you want to know more about the transom and how to fix, or what it would cost to fix, might want to post a thread over in the Restoration forum. http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=22

The deal with transom, stringers, and decks on a daily basis.
