??? on 5.0 sea water pump

having some problem with my sea water pump, merc 5.0 belt driven,

shoul i be able to turn the pulley by hand??

reason today i start the engin i notice the belt was not turning.

i tighten the belt some more , this time the belt turns everything but dosent turn the raw water pump pulley and it was smoking the belt.

i shut it dow and call it a night. what could be the problem guys. thanks

thanks that what i am afraid off boat did sit from 2008 winter gad

thanks you is it sopose to be able to turn with hand.

What is the year of your engine? Or engine serial number.

If you have the brass style impeller housing, then there is a good chance a few of the rubber impeller blades have gotten stuck in the holes for the water flow inside the impeller housing.

If that happens it's time for a new impeller anyways, Because it's kind of hard to free it up by just turning it the other way. Been down that road a few times now.:rolleyes::)

If its been sitting since 2008 the impeller has a nice set in the blades. Assuming that the impeller was not brand new in 2008 it is more than 2 years old and needs to be replaced anyway.

0L612762 serial number raining here in brooklyn today hope to get at it thursday.

impeller was change mid season 2008 if i tighten the belt some more and it dosent turn i will take it out and put new impeller , what a pain

If you can't turn it by hand, then all the belt tightening is going to do is destroy the belt - if it isn't already.

rain hold up so i went to the yard, try again to turn it by hand and it can only turn counter clock faceing the engine. i took it off, now it is time for a rubuild, ??? what number kit do i need to perchase?? any step by step info, ??

should i just wait antil i get the new kit before i open it, as you know i am itiching to open the litter bugger lol.

the number on the pump is 46-8075 SAE PF-GF LH ROT

It is possible for the vanes on the impeller to "rock backwards" when you shut the engine off. I had that happen to mine once, and the belt wasn't tight enough to turn it back. I too, could only turn the pump counter clockwise by hand. I remove the pump as you have done, took it apart, and found a perfect impeller and housing, just with the blades flopped over the wrong way. I removed the impeller, flipped it over the correct way as I re-installed it, put the pump back on the motor, and used it for 2 more years (200 hours) before the impeller failed for other reasons. Good luck

cant believe how easy it is to change these impeller, just need to know the correct way to have the vanes , do i use vaseline or marine grease , boy this forum is the best. last time this impeller went the yard charge 850 dollars to to do the job, it takes me about 15 min to un bolt it from the pulley witl limited room on a 2000 bayliner 2452 . just toss me those info on the vaves, guys and i will be set thanks yall.

lol time traveler ha ha . any way still need to know if the impeller need just a little more info i already grease it up with some petroleum jelly Vaseline.
i spoke with the previous owner and he told me there is a bag in the cabin with about three new impeller, gess what i toss that bag in the garbage thinking it was junk item been save gosh. oh well

They were probably old and hardened anyway.

Problem with using something like vaseline is that it can harm the rubber. Hopefully it gets flushed out well enough.

is it just me it seems the previous owner has install the impeller the wrong way by the look of those vanes curves , the engine turn clock wize , i spoke with a mechanic this morning, and he said the vanes should install with the direction of the rotation. correct me on this , now i did have a recent thread on this engine , i close the thread because i did start/run the engine without the belt attach not long to over heat anything and it did pur like a kiten.

so now with belt install this problem pops up.

The vanes are definately "flopped" over the wrong way. Since you have it apart, just replace the impeller. They are about $28 new. Don't worry about vasoline and all that jazz, just either have someone hold it while you "screw" the impeller into the housing, or put the housing in a vise. Be careful not to crack the housing.
Also inspect the housing and that wear palte. You don't want the housing to have any chuncks missing from the inside or to be scored up real bad. If the wear plate is grooved real bad, flip it over. Hope that helps.

thanks to everyone who help me on this, good news install new impeller drop it in the drink and take her for a nice cruise, so far perfect .
